Oral Argument Set In The Case Of
Public Benevolent Trust of Mary Powell Crume v. Humane Society of Indianapolis and the Attorney General of Indiana

Public, Media Encouraged To Attend

Indianapolis, Indiana - A group of local animal welfare groups is getting their day in court, and they are encouraging the public and media to attend. Last year, a coalition of animal welfare providers filed a lawsuit challenging the propriety of the use of the Crume Trust, a public charitable trust for animals, as collateral for a line of credit by the Humane Society of Indianapolis, the trustee. The coalition was concerned that the Humane Society's actions would cause the Crume Trust to be exhausted, severely damaging Indianapolis animal welfare.

When the coalition - which includes Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership, Home for Friendless Animals, Inc., Move To Act, Southside Animal Shelter, Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana and Norma Jean Balcom (relative to Mary Powell Crume) - petitioned the Probate Court to have a voice in the distribution of the Crume Trust, they were denied standing in the court. The groups have since appealed the ruling, and oral arguments will be held this week in the Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals will decide whether any party other than the Indiana Attorney General has an interest in the administration or benefits of a public charitable trust.
